Liver and liver health
The liver is an essential powerhouse organ of the body. Being one of the largest organs, it does innumerable functions to maintain normal body functions.
Apart from producing bile, which is important in the digestion and absorption of the food we eat, the liver is also an effective filter for toxins in the body. All the nutrients in the food we eat are absorbed in the intestine, reach the liver mixed in blood, filtered, and further flow to the heart and other organs.
Maintaining good liver health is very important for everyone to prevent damage to liver structure and function. The abnormal functioning liver has an effect on other organs of the body and also on the overall health of a person.
Major conditions that can harm the liver are fatty liver, excessive alcohol intake, infection with hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus. Each of the aforementioned causes can affect the liver when not treated appropriately lead to major health issues later. Fatty liver disease and alcoholic liver disease are the most common causes of liver diseases. These two conditions account for a maximum number of cases that need liver transplantation.
The liver can also be affected by diseases of other organs - like in severe heart disease liver function can be abnormal. Liver functions become normal once the heart disease is treated.
It is utmost most important to diagnose the condition early and initiate remedial measures.
The liver is healthy when it receives a good nutritious diet, regular exercise, avoiding alcohol, and by limiting unnecessary medications. People with diabetes should keep their blood sugars under strict control.
Many a time, liver disease can be subtle and is identified only on blood tests and on ultrasound. Unfortunately, people come to medical attention when there is a florid liver disease that manifests as jaundice, accumulation of water in the belly, blood vomiting, etc. It is better to identify the liver disease in at-risk individuals when there are no symptoms so that adequate precautions can be taken to prevent the progression of the liver disease.
